Connecting Discipline vs. Distancing Discipline

Discipline can be extremely frustrating and sometimes it seems like nothing works. Thinking of discipline as a way to connect with your child can seem like an oxymoron, but it doesn’t have to be. As a parent, you can discipline your child while maintaining a positive connection rather than creating distance. Think about it …

Connected Discipline vs. Distancing Discipline

  • Time-in versus Time-outs or spanking
  • Bringing the child closer versus sending her away
  • Resolution versus consequences
  • Problem-solving versus Lectures and sermons
  • Advocacy stance versus Adversary stance
  • Focus on the child’s strengths versus focus on the child’s failures
